Sven Brunso Pro Skier - Highlights 2010 & 2011

We are proud to introduce Sven Brunso, professional free skier, and Croakies product tester. Sven contacted us last year, as he was spending 6 days a week in the backcountry, hiking, skiing, and photographing his adventures. He was nice enough to bring Croakies belts & the new ARC along with him to see how they held up to his rigorous adventures. We appreciate his involvement with our products and are continuously inspired by his travels, hard work, and experience. Look for more stories, pics and videos from Sven as the ski season approaches.

News in the Croakies Area

There are 2 regional news stories that have made national news in the last week, that are worthy of a blog post. First, the Yellowstone Oil Spill, that happened last Friday July 2nd, and the recent Bear Attack in Yellowstone.

This article from Forbes talks about the recent mauling in Yellowstone Park. A bear attack is really a very rare event and an unfortunate incident. Although we are sad the hiker died, we are glad that park officials have decided not to kill the mother bear, because it has been determined that she was acting to protect her cubs. Bear awareness is key to visiting the park and safely enjoying the trails. Carry bear spray on you at all times in the backcountry.

The Yellowstone Oil Spill is deeply upsetting to me personally, because I'm very familiar with that area and understand what has been effected. This winter was a big snow winter in this area, and the Yellowstone River has been in a larger than normal flood stage for quite some time. The pipeline was severed by the high water and debris. This is going to have a large impact on many acres of wetlands and farm fields, where the crude oil has bee pushed into from the high water. I hope as much can be cleaned up as possible and the ecosystem rebounds after time. There are lessons to be gained from this and my hope is that we rethink our current view of flood plains and we move oil infrastructure out of dangerous areas.

That means preparing myself and my equipment ahead of time. Preparation is essential for safe & fun river trips, and now is the time to prepare yourself and your equipment. White Water Rafting Coming Soon

Spring is taking it's time showing up in Wyoming this year, but our thoughts are beginning to drift towards the rivers and spring run off. We are anticipating a big run off this spring, from the heavy snow winter that continues into April. Now is time to make your water adventure plans for summer rafting trips. There's no memory like a hair raising ride on world class rapids, or a scenic float through Grand Teton National Park. Here is a list of white water rafting companies in the area, compiled by Greater Yellowstone Resource Guide.

Yellowstone Region Whitewater Rafting Companies

Mad River Boat Trips • (Jackson Hole) When you head down the Snake River with Mad River, you're traveling with more than 100 years of river guide experience. Guides are knowledgeable in local lore, Wyoming's rugged and beautiful waters, and advanced rafting safety. You'll find our entire crew prides themselves in providing the very best, most exciting river trip you can take in the Jackson area. Come, grab a paddle and take a trip with Mad River. We guarantee it will be one you remember for a long time.

Jackson Hole Whitewater • (Jackson Hole) Voted The #1rafting company in Jackson Hole by our local newspaper the "Jackson Hole Guide." That says it all. We have been in business for 35 years and were the first company to have permits on the Snake River. We are a small company by choice. We have had the chance to expand but feel that "small is better"! Visit our website to find out why...

Wyoming River Trips • (Cody Wyoming) Wyoming River Trips was founded in 1978 with Rick and Ron Blanchard personally escorting trips; a practice that is still carried on today. Our Company has been featured on ESPN and Outdoor Life television network; along with national publications such as Travel and Leisure, Better Homes and Gardens, and Mature Outlook Magazines. Wyoming River Trips is the only continually owned and operated company in the historic Cody Area running the Shoshone river. The Shoshone river is the main eastern drainage of Yellowstone National Park. It reads like a flowing history book with almost as many scenic vistas as the colorful people and cultures who explored it. This river was used as a trade route during the fur-trading era for the mountain men and Native Americans who entered the "Yellow Rock" country in pursuit of its abundance of wildlife. This pursuit of adventure continues today.

Flying Pig Adventure Company • (Gardiner Montana) Ride the river with us! If you're looking for raft trip with exciting whitewater, breathtaking scenery, and safe and knowledgeable guides - our raft trips are for you. The longest free-flowing river in the lower 48 states, the Yellowstone River, offers fun and exciting white water rafting for all ages and experience levels. Slam through the waves of the Gardiner Town Stretch while helping to navigate your raft through the notorious rapids; Man Eater, Pickets Wave, Creighton's Hole, and Sleeping Giant in your white water rafting adventure near Yellowstone National Park.

Gallatin River Rafting • (Big Sky Montana) We offer canoe, kayak and rafting trips on rivers, creeks, streams and lakes near Gallatin River. You can experience rafting trips ranging from a brief two hour tour to a wilderness adventure lasting several days. Our guides are fully licenced and are carefully chosen on the basis of their skill and experience, their ability to make sound decisions and their ability to communicate and identify with our clients. We're experts in organizing family and group-travel! If you have any questions that are not addressed on this website, please call one of our friendly and knowledgeable whitewater rafting agents today!

FRAC Act Re-introduced in Congress

It's EARTH WEEK at Croakies® and we will be posting news and events from our conservation partners through out the week. This article by Jessie Thomas-Blate, Coordinator, Most Endangered Rivers, is about the FRAC Act re-introduced to the U.S. Senate.

The FRAC Act would do the following:

Require disclosure of the chemicals used in the process of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas extraction, but not the proprietary chemical formula. Disclosures would be made available to the public online.

Protect proprietary chemical formulas– much like the way Coca-Cola must reveal the ingredients of Coke, but not their secret formula; oil and gas companies would have to reveal the chemicals, but not the specific formula.

Enact an emergency provision requiring proprietary chemical formulas to be disclosed to a treating physician, the State, or EPA in emergency situations where the information is needed to provide medical treatment.

Repeal a provision added to the Energy Policy Act of 2005 exempting the industry from complying with the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), one of our landmark environmental and public health protection statutes.

Wind Paddle Sails

So often I've been blown across a lake or pressed against the bank of a river, while paddling with all of my might agains the wind. It looks like those frustrating epic struggles can now be turned into fun with these paddle sails. I was thinking of how perfect this would be on the Puget Sound, with a sea kayak. I would think having a pontoon or outrigger for stability in big bodies of water, might be prudent, I'm not the most stable paddler ; ). I could see these sails being a great friend on a long river journey or boundary water adventure.

It's a proud moment for us!

Gisele and Balenciaga Make Croakies

Can Gisele and Balenciaga Make Croakies Happen?

Well, well well, Croakies made it's way to the New York fashion scene, and look.... it's the next big thing in fashion.  Sounds good to us!!!  We love to see fashionistas fighting over the coolness of our eyewear retainers.  If these are making the scene, wait until our belts make it on their radar.
